Property Description
A unique opportunity has arisen to purchase one of the most unusual properties in Pembrokeshire, possibly, Wales. Old St Lawrence is located in Yerberston, an area within close proximity to Carew, Cresselly and Lawrenny. This Grade II listed church conversion is enriched with interesting history, performing its last services in 1976. Originally built in the 13th century ,at the same time that St Davids Cathedral was completed ,it was changed in the 17th century and again in Victorian times.
The conversion, which was executed by the current owner and has retained many of its best features and its ecclesiastical charm. The large stained-glass windows have been preserved which interestingly, at different times of day throw coloured reflections onto the original flagstone flooring. The original flagstone flooring has been lifted to install underfloor heating fuelled by a ground source heat pump throughout the ground floor which is also complemented by a large Wood burner making it a focal point of the lounge space.
This impressive stone church is visible by its tower from the road but is secluded and set back and accessed by a sloping driveway through two wooden gates. The tranquillity and setting of this property are immediately apparent. The building and grounds are leasehold on a 999-year lease which was issued in 2004, there is an L shaped portion of land adjoining the plot which still belongs to the Church in Wales. The current leaseholder has the use of this land and a licence to maintain. The public can access this area as it is a cemetery although currently the vendor has explained that there are only three graves that are attended by the same family. This area has been planted with fruit trees and other flowering plants but is mainly to lawn.
Entering the building via the original doorway on the Northside due to its footprint based on the holy cross, you are able to look directly through to the south side where the later porchway built by the Victorians has been turned into a cosy reading snug, double French doors lead out into the lawned area on that side of the building.
To the right of this is the property has been changed to accommodate the two bedrooms and cloakroom on the first floor with the bathroom and a understairs utility / storage room on the ground floor. Between these the west, arched, stained glass window throws light onto the floor towards sundown.
The living and kitchen space has retained the cathedral ceilings with original exposed beams, the height into the eaves is 7 m and 5m respectively and produce a dramatic and awe-inspiring feeling that nowhere other than a church could produce. The property has kept its originality throughout which makes this property a very rare find. In the one corner a tall bookcase adds interest to the eclectic interior. Each window is framed by long curtains adding to the height of this space.
Stepping up into the kitchen/ dining area with its original quarry tiled flooring the division between living and kitchen space has been divided by a breakfast bar constructed from the pulpit and other wood from the original church as has the kitchen cabinets and windowsills and other parts of the construction.
Upstairs the bedrooms are both double sized and the larger room has double doors opening out onto a Juliet balcony that overlooks the downstairs living space, there are Velux to both these rooms. There is also a cloakroom adjacent to the larger bedroom, that currently houses a toilet and sink but does have space for clothes storage or installation of a shower.
Downstairs the main bathroom has an internal leaded glass window, a roll top bath , a large tiled shower and sink and toilet .
Directly in front of the building are a range of wooden outbuildings, one of which has access to the sceptic tank. Alongside these a walk through some fruit trees opens into a large, grassed area with an ornamental pond and a bench located beneath some trees. Most of the grounds are planted to encourage wildlife and the property is lined with mature trees of various species
